Tutorial: How to bring back the old Windows 8.1 networks list in Windows 10 build 9879

Microsoft started updating the network selection window in Windows 10 build 9860, removing the old flyout from the charms list and replacing it with a window which opened PC settings. Many consider this change a step backwards, and technically it is as Microsoft isn't done with the new implementation yet. For those who wish to return to the old method, we've got a tutorial for you. Originally spotted by SpaceCore on Twitter, this hack requires editing the registry, so if you're a novice at changing registry strings we advise you do not try this at home. To get the old flyout back in Windows 10 build 9860 and 9879, follow the instructions below:

1. Open regedit (WIN+R and type regedit.exe)
2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Control Panel\Settings\Network
3. Take ownership of the "Network" key/folder (right click, Permissions)
4. Select "Advanced" in the Permissions window
5. In the Advanced window, select "Change" where the owner field is (at the top of the window)
6. Type in your username and save your changes.
7. Close the advanced window
8. Now select "Administrators" in the security tab
9. Make sure "Full control" is selected, then apply changes
10. Now that's done, double click "ReplaceVan"
11. Change it's value from 1 to 0

Once that's done, you'll have the old flyout network selector back. It's unclear why Microsoft decided to implement the new, unfinished version of the network selector so early, especially since the old methods still works in these early builds.

Tutorial:How to enable an early version of the new Start Screen in Windows 10 build 9879

We recently discovered the beginnings of what appears to be the new Start Screen / Continuum mode in the most recent Windows Technical Preview. The Start Screen, being very early in development is very buggy and broken, however we understand that some of you wish to try it out.
Well, we've got you a simple guide for enabling the new Start Screen. We must warn you, it's super broken. We don't advise you use it on anything right now, especially tablets as the Start Screen doesn't even hit full screen mode yet.
If you wish to enable it, follow these steps:

1. Open regedit (WIN+R and type regedit.exe)
2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ImmersiveShell\Launcher\ (The "Launcher" key may not exist, if not just create a new key)
3. Add a new DWORD 32-bit
4. Name it UseExperience
5. Change it's value to 1
6. Restart Explorer

Once that's done, you'll have access to the new Start Screen in Windows 10. We must warn you, the Start Screen enable-able in 9879 isn't anything like what's seen in the photo above. To return to the previous Start experience, just change the value back to 0.

VLC for Windows Phone 8.1 may hit the store next week

It has been a year since VLC started development of the Windows Phone 8.1 of its app. Now it maybe the final steps as one of the developers of VLC for Windows Phone, Hugo Beauzée-Luyssen has tweeted the above Windows Phone App Certification Test Kit result, indicating that the app passes trial certification tests on the user’s own PC.
This does not mean that the app has been certified by Microsoft yet, but does indicate that it likely will.

Facebook picks up a major update for Windows Phone

Facebook has updated their Messenger app for Windows Phone today.
This update adds some great new features, including the ability to message people in your phone contact list even if you’re not Facebook friends via SMS, directly from the app.
The app will now also let you add colourful drawings and text to photos from your camera roll before you send them.

Microsoft confirms updating all the WP8 devices to Windows Phone 10 in coming months

We have already seen many rumors about the update of Windows Phone 8 devices to Windows Phone 10, but now we have something really solid to prove the point. Answering to @_Y06_ on Twitter, Microsoft confirmed that all the current Windows Phone 8 devices will be upgradable to Windows Phone 10 in coming months.

@_Y06_ There will be Windows 10 upgrades for all Lumia Windows Phone 8 devices :) And we will release new Windows 10 models in the future!

We should caution that technically speaking, Microsoft's Twitter account is not necessarily their press channel, but it is rather official. Still, we are currently not aware of any technological limitations as to why current phones could not be updated, reaffirming the @Lumia tweet.
Of course its not official until it happens, and we must remember previous supposedly official tweets saying Windows Phone 7 handsets will be upgraded to Windows Phone 8, but so far we are pretty confident this prediction will come true.

Microsoft Hints At New Windows Phone Dev Preview Update

Microsoft yesterday updated their Battery Saver app for Windows Phone 8.1 devices. Microsoft has now updated the Store listing for this new update v1.0.14201.0. They have provided a detailed change log. One of the new feature included in this update is real time Live Tile for Battery Saver app and it requires Windows Phone build 8.1.14203 or higher. Current Windows Phone dev preview build is 8.1.14192. So, there is a good chance that Microsoft will be releasing it soon.

• Foreground vs Background metrics: Usage bars now show foreground and background showing you how much power a particular app consumes whether you’re using it or not using it.
• Time Filters: We’ve added a filter also in the usage view where you can now specify the timeframe of data to look at. Can now show data from the last day, 2 days or a week.
• What Does Battery saver do anyway?: Re-worded the settings page to more clearly indicate what battery saver mode does.
• Real Time Live Tile: If you pin the battery saver app to start, it now updates in real time! (Requires build 8.1.14203 or higher.)
• Quick Settings: You can now add battery saver to the quick settings menu and cycle through the battery saver options there. (Requires build 8.1.14203 or higher.)
• Turn On until next charge: We added a new option to let users turn on battery saver until next charge!
• Improved Battery usage scaling: The usage data now scales to actual device battery capacity with full width mapping to 100% capacity. Additionally, the bars now use a logarithmic scaling algorithm to make the bars more visible when usage is small for a particular app.

Windows 10 Preivew Build 9879 ISO Now Available For Download

Microsoft today released new Windows 10 Build 9879 to Windows Insiders. This new build will come to you automatically via Windows Update, installed during your maintenance window if your PC is plugged in and on or sleeping. If you don’t want to wait for it to download and install on its own – you can go to PC Settings, Update and recovery, Preview builds and click the Check Now button to go get it now. This is a full build, and it will be installed as an in-place upgrade, so you’ll go through those colorful “installing your apps” screens again. This is because your account is being re-provisioned after the upgrade.
If you want an ISO file to perform a clean install of Windows 10 Build 9879, you can do that now. Microsoft has released Windows 10 Enterprise Preview ISO in the Evaluation Center.

Microsoft launches the Lumia 535
