Microsoft detailed the third upcoming major OS update for Windows Phone 8, which will brings some new features like support for higher resolution display, new generation processors, screen rotation lock, driving mode, custom ringtone and much more to the current devices. Along with this, Microsoft also announced early access to preview version of the upcoming OS for developers.
Well, the preview version of Windows Phone 8 GDR3 aka Update 3 is now available to download for registered Windows Phone developers. You can use this app to opt-in your phone to receive early Windows Phone updates before they are generally available, enabling you to run and test your app on real hardware running the latest OS before your customers.
Here are the installation steps:
- To participate and download Windows Phone 8 Update 3, you need to meet one of three conditions: your phone is “developer-unlocked,” you’re a registered Windows Phone Store developer, or you’re a registered Windows Phone App Studio developer.
- To ensure the best experience, your device must be running the latest OS release (currently 8.0.10322.71) or greater to receive early updates via this program
- If above requirements meet – download Windows Phone Preview for Developers app and install it on your device.
- Open the app and once you accept the terms and conditions, it allows you to opt your phone in to receive updates.
- After that, head into the settings of your phone and go the phone update section and do a check.
- Follow the regular phone update procedure to update your device to latest available OS build.
Key features:
- Access to latest pre-release Windows Phone updates
- Ability to opt-out of pre-releases and only receive production Windows Phone updates
- This only includes the OS update, not device specific firmware
Notes:
- Updates will only include the Microsoft update, and not additional OEM drivers/firmware i.e. this is not Nokia’s ‘Bittersweet shimmer’; users should remain with their current firmware and will not lose it
- You will continue to receive the official update (and firmware) when they become publicly available, so there is no missing out of features, nor will you ever be behind
- You CANNOT REVERT to a prior OS version once you have taken an update via this program
- This will void your device warranty
