Having touch problems on Lumia 535, a fix is on the way

Many Windows Phone users have reported that the new Lumia 535 has a serious touch issue making it almost unusable specially with multiple fingers.  Winphoneviet demonstrates the issue pretty convincingly, with the handset having issues tracking fingers accurately, especially when it comes to multi-touch.
This problem gets worst when a user uses the WordFlow or the Swype keyboard on Microsoft Lumia 535. Also from my personal experience, the touch has problem specially on the far downside of the screen near the navigation keys.
Fortunately Microsoft has said they are aware of the issue, and are planning a software update to address it. Check the video by Winphoneviet demonstrating the issue below.

In the interim some users are reporting that de-activating Screen Magnifier (under Settings>Ease of Access), which is on by default, helps improve the situation significantly.

Are our 535-using readers plagued by this problem? Let us know below.

What Nokia's really proud of is the fact that you can scribble letters on the screen to quickly pull up apps that haven't surface on the list yet. I've been playing with a near-production build on a series of Android phones for the past few days, and it's surprisingly pleasant -- the letter recognition is snappy enough on my Nexus 5, and if you're feeling particularly bored, you can scrawl out Google search queries one letter at a time. Curious for a taste before the N1 hits store shelves? Wunderbar: the final version of Z Launcher will go live in the Google Play Store shortly, complete with support for rooted devices. Don't let anyone tell you that complaining loudly won't get you what you want.

The N1 is a curious little beast, a chimaera of sorts infused with DNA from Nokia, Google and Apple (even though Nokia would probably deny that last one). We're not sure if Nokia can move the needle in a crazy-competitive tablet market, but there is one thing we're sure of: we can't wait to try this thing out.

Video: Unboxing of Microsoft Band

The Microsoft Band was just released on Thursday, October 30th. If you haven’t been following the news, the Microsoft Band is a hybrid between a Fitbit and a typical smartwatch. It has a touchscreen and lets you interact with Cortana, in addition to tracking your heart rate and more.
The device is pretty nice. Feels a little bulky on my wrist, but not bad. Comfort is questionable, but as I play around with adjusting the band size, I’m finding something that feels better. It’s quite useful for getting notifications of text messages, or checking your calendar.
Check the unboxing video by Windows Central for more info.

Asphalt Overdrive from Gameloft is coming Thursday

During E3 this year, Gameloft announced the latest game in the Asphalt series of racers. Surprisingly, the next Asphalt won't be Asphalt 9. Instead, the series is spinning off in a new direction with Asphalt Overdrive. Instead of a serious arcade-style racer, the new Asphalt will be an endless racer – sort of like Gameloft's recently released Spider-Man Unlimited or Sega's Crazy Taxi City Rush.
Players who are wondering how well Asphalt works as an endless racer plays won't have to wait long to find out. Today Gameloft announced that Asphalt: Overdrive will be coming to Android, iOS, Windows Phone, and Windows 8 this Thursday, September 25! The publisher also released a new trailer to celebrate the news. Keep reading for the trailer.

The Windows Phone version will run on devices with 512 MB of RAM, so nobody has to miss out on the endless racing. The Windows 8 version will exclusively feature landscape support, since Windows 8 PCs tend to be locked to that orientation.
Asphalt Overdrive will be free with in-app purchases when it arrives on Android, iOS, Windows Phone, and Windows 8 this Thursday.

Windows 9's new Start menu demonstrated on video

While Microsoft is making final preparations to reveal Windows 9 on 30th September, we are seeing a bunch of leaks from yesterday including the new Start Menu.  German site WinFuture has posted a two-minute video that demonstrates how the Start menu works in the next major release of Windows. As you’d expect, it’s very similar to what Microsoft demonstrated with traditional apps mixing with modern apps (and their Live Tiles) into a familiar Start menu.
The account options have been placed at the top of the Start menu for now, allowing you to lock and sign out of a machine, while shutdown and restart options can be access by a visible button alongside the account section. The new Start menu consists of two sections: one for a list of traditional apps in the familiar left pane, and a new section on the right that consists mainly of modern apps with Live Tiles. However, the right section can collapse to make way for Start menu users to dig into File Explorer, otherwise it appears to work just like the Windows 7 menu with options to pin apps and browse through a list of all apps.

Once more and more apps are pinned to the Start menu, it expands automatically and there are options to resize Tiles in a way that’s identical to the regular Start screen in Windows 8. While this new Start menu clearly isn’t designed for tablet users, there appears to be an option to “use the Start menu instead of the Start screen” for those with mouse and keyboard users. That will likely be enabled by default, and Microsoft may even remove the fullscreen Start screen altogether for desktop users in favor of a Start menu that expands.
Floating modern apps are also demonstrated several times during the video, and they appear to work as you would expect. Modern apps will no longer need to be snapped into position or run fullscreen, instead they work like traditional Windows apps and can be resized freely. This is only a very early look at the next version of Windows, expected to be named just Windows or Windows 9, and the user interface of the desktop is bound to change significantly by the time this ships next year. Microsoft is expected to distribute an early Windows Technical Preview at the end of the month or early October so that developers and enterprise customers can evaluate the many changes the company is making.

Video: Sneak peek at the Lock screen apps on Windows Phone 8.1

The most exciting and interesting part of Build 2014 was custom animated lockscreen apps for Windows Phone 8.1 devices. Joe Belfiore said we can expect the first beta of lock screen apps to show up on our handsets in 1-2 weeks.
Developer David Lorenzin has jumped the queue slightly by giving us a preview on video of the apps he will be publishing to the Windows Phone Store.
According to the video his lock screen app will feature 3 styles of unlocking –  Classic,  which features diagonal sliding lines, Clock Plus, which features text revolving around a circular hub, and  Stripe, which features sliding horizontal sections. Check the video after a break.

Watch that YouTube video above to preview those new Lock screen APIs in action. Those are animated Lock screens that will apparently be published sometime soon this week and you'll be able to nab.
Joe Belfiore also informed via Twitter last week that the Lock screen app will be in English and require 1GB of RAM at launch.
Watch the video and let us know if you like Classic, Clock Plus or Stripe.

Marcus Ash talks about Cortana on other platforms

A video has now surfaced showing Microsoft’s Marcus Ash (Group Program Manager for Windows Phone) answering the question, and from his response we can gather it is not the first time the issue has been discussed by the Windows Phone team.
He explained that the number 1 priority was to provide an excellent experience on Windows Phone, to help sell handsets, but after this has been well bedded in, the second priority would be spreading Cortana to the rest of the Microsoft ecosystem.
After this however the question of going cross-platform did come up, and he notes that Microsoft needed to be where their customers were, and that by going cross-platform they could provide an advantage to their users who used multiple ecosystems.
Our readers will note that Google Now is not just available on Android handsets, but also iOS and even the desktop via Chrome.  Should Microsoft also aim for ubiquity, or at the very least availability on multiple platforms? Let us know below.

The end result is a spectacular montage of some trick shots knocking smartphones out the hands of their owners. These unlucky targets are subsequently reimbursed with a shiny new Lumia 630.

 • Video and Music Xbox apps separated into two apps
 • New Store layout, as we recently reported

 • IE tabs are displayed in multitask view
 • Pull down to close apps in multitask
 • New stock Photos app, with sections All, Albums, Favorites now on separate panels

CoolXap.com have posted another video from their captured Nokia Lumia 630.

We are about three weeks away from the launch of the first major update for Windows Phone 8 users. We know a lot about the next big version of Windows Phone, but there’s still more info trickling out as we lead up to the big unveil. Today we’re looking at the default camera application that Windows Phone 8.1 handsets will ship with. Video after the break.

Few things to take away from the video above that shows the settings for photos + camera and the camera application itself.

 • Photos can be grouped by time and location
 • You can quickly pin specific settings to the camera viewfinder (white balance, resolution, lens picker, front/rear camera toggle, etc.)
 • Manually select different scenes (nighttime, portrait, etc.)

 • Can quickly change video quality when in video recording mode
 • Can select photo quality for burst mode

Microsoft’s is introducing Cortana in Windows Phone 8.1. Out of all the new features in Windows Phone 8.1 it’s the one we’re most excited about. As you probably know, Cortana is the forthcoming intelligent personal assistant that will debut in Windows Phone 8.1, but probably seep into other Microsoft products like Windows 8 and Xbox One. We’ve seen screenshots of the UI before, but the video below is the first time the public is seeing it for the first time.
The video indicate that the service uses many more data sources than we expect, including:
 • Location
 • Contacts
 • Voice input
 • Email and text messages
 • Browser History
 • Search History
 • Calendar details

Check the video from UnleashThePhones.com after the break.
